Auckland pays 53% of New Zealand's road taxes and gets 16% of it spent here... but we don't mind. I mean, if every little hick town want's a four lane bypass how else can it be done? I was quite happy to pay a regional petrol tax. I'd be quite happy to have my rates increased. I'd rather the funding not come from central government because it means the decisions will be made by small minded petty little bureaucrats in Wellington. I'd rather we paid for it, and we decided what was or wasn't needed. I think most Aucklanders feel the same way. Just quit the whining, we'll pay for it, just hurry up and get on with it! If Wellington wants to keep playing silly buggars over who's paying, you can hardly blame Auckland for it.

I protested (for a few months at least) about paying for the cake tin, knowing I would never put a foot in it. I think it all comes down to realising that councils, regional councils and/or govt, will always charge us for something we don't want, need or will even use, no matter how long, hard or sincerely we protest about it, it's always gonna happen ;D

Stephen Joyce? That name came up on Google when I was searching for the Mr X in the court case re a gambling scandal thread in TM about a month ago. The thread starter seems to have disappeared (banned?) since then, which is a shame. I was curious to know just who this Mr X was.

Yip point taken cacteur however I'm not into spending money on other region's infrastructure when that's local and central governments job. What I object to is the government spending money on expanding MP's community offices and increasing staff whereas the government would do better to spend that funding on Auckland's problem.
Maire, Steven Joyce is the Minister of Transport. Now I'm intrigued about Mr X.

Dear Auckland....Learn to car-pool, or take the bus, or get a job closer to home. I'm less than thrilled to be paying towards your monumentally stupid habit of taking one car into the city for each adult family member.
If Auckland does indeed pay 53% of all road taxes, one must assume it is also home to 53% of New Zealands motorists. Seems ironic that one of the few places in NZ with a half decent public transport system is also home to the highest number of under-utilised passenger seats.

8-)Yeah right.. and who pays for the Naki's miles of sealed roads. Something like $500,000 a kilometre, and how many ratepayers you got down there? Do you really think you pay for them? Aucklander's don't have a problem propping up your desire for a country lifestyle, with big city roads. Most of Auckland's road tax comes from our bus fleet, which includes half the countries buses, and our truck fleet nearly 75% of the countries trucks. Our car fleet constitutes around a third of the countries cars, and more Aucklanders do not own a car, than any other area in NZ. I see most families in the Naki own two or three cars. We also happily paid, through our local rates, 20% of the upgrading of State Highway 2 through Maramarua in the Waikato, so that the solid line of trucks carting freight from Tauranga's land port in Manukau City, to the Port of Tauranga were able to save time on the trip. These trucks also use Auckland's motorways and streets, and do Tauranga rate payers pay?... and do Aucklanders moan? The ARC also funded most of State Highway 1 through to Hamilton, and supports much of the roading in Northland. You find, during holiday periods, a lot of country folk moan about Aucklanders flocking to their beaches, and their mountains and lakes. This really cracks me up. You never hear Aucklanders moan about people jamming up the streets around our Eden Park, or our Western Springs Stadium, in fact, during a big Elton John concert years ago, I remember seeing Auckland motorists directing a solid line of Toyota HiLux's through the Southern/Western motorway connections to the Springs. Cool eh? ;D Fully two thirds of the countries manufactured goods come through our Port, your cars, your stereos, your computers, use our trucks on our roads to supply your needs. Have you heard us moan? Are we asking you to fund our trains and roads? We have to fight to be allowed to fund our own infrastructure with extra taxes if need be, because the rest of the country cannot do with out our contribution. We finally get there, and now, because Labour instituted it, Wellington now want's to stop that and introduce it's own plan for our infrastructure. That this new scheme requires the rest of the country to help, has nothing to do with Auckland, or Aucklander's. So if you need a moan, direct it at the Nats in Wellington We don't give a stuff. We'll pay for it. Just bloody get on with it. We are tired of various pressure groups using Auckland to gain brownie points for their own political ends. The Mayor of Timaru blaming Auckland's roading crisis for the death of a kid on a dangerous, underfunded bridge down there is typical of some of the crap people come up with. If New Zealanders continue this provincial attitude we will become third world. Auckland is New Zealand's City, it is your big smoke, your cosmopolitan experience, the face you present to the world. If Auckland is made to look second rate, New Zealand looks second rate. Get over yourselves and get used to it.
