Watching the late news last night, article about a independent group wanting to take 'P' education into secondary schools, the presentation is quite graphic showing some of the physical effects of 'P'
Anyway some bright spark interviewed, came up with the statement during the news item - "Drug prevention education doesn't work its been around for years ad hasn't had any effect"
On the contrary I'd argue school kids haven't had the exposure nor has there been the availability of hard core drugs, that is apparent these days. 'P' is being sold to school kids... nearly 3000 known users in the age group between 10 and 20 years old in the last year - That terrifies me!
The thing is I think it can work because the physical damage that drug causes is hideous, I think teenagers particularly are very aware of their appearance also 'P' isn't cool never has been, unlike marijuana which is a drug that 'Cool' people do use. Other hard drugs haven't been that obtainable to kids because of the cost, when I was a teenager certain 'A' class drugs were only available to more affluent people. But this drug 'P' is available to everyone.
Maori Health providers have been presenting Maori communities with the same education in regard to 'P' over the last few years more to make parents aware of the totally detrimental effects of the drug 'P' the signs to look out for and examples of what could happen if someone you know is on the drug. I would hope that education is having some effect in Maori communities.
But the fact is that 'P' crosses all economic and social borders. All of our youth can be exposed to it. So I celebrate the fact that an independent group has come up with an idea which may have a positive effect in regard to our youth. Even though it's not a new idea, but it's dealing with something far more damaging than anything past in my opinion.
