Two friends have one and I am surprised how accurate they are. My friends today was on the lowest she has ever seen meaning a very very bad storm of the next 2 days. I think they are fun never had one.
What are others experiences. apparently though many people tap them but that is a no no. Perhaps the tapping things is us wanting to make sure etc.

No don't use one but was listening to the radio about 2 weeks ago. A caller rung up from Papakura and had 2 readings. One was at shoulder level read about 11 degrees. The other was grass level and read 5 degrees!

Ick! I don't have one in the house, but hubby has one in the shed. Last week it was so cold that our dog didn't want to run on the frost. We ride the kids to school in the morning ... brrrrrr ... and drag the dog along for a run. Dawg didn't like the frost. Not one little bit! Poor thing. We got him to run on the footpath instead of the grass.

We had one in our hallway when I was young and can remember Dad doing just what you mentioned, "tapping" it. Every morning he would stop by it and tap the glass, then give his weather report for the day. I can't remember if they were correct or not, but it is a pleasant memory and I just might get one for our hall
