23 July 2008 A disturbing insight into the kitchen cleaning habits of New Zealanders has been revealed in a new survey. Dish cloth manufacturer, 3M, has asked New Zealanders about their hygiene habits. It says a concerning 14 percent of people only replace their sponge when it falls apart. They are used for cleaning sports shoes, wiping out pet bowls and mopping up spills on the kitchen floor. Strangely, 17 percent of people believe the colour of a sponge makes a difference to hygiene, with 9 percent of those surveyed saying yellow is the most hygienic colour for a sponge. A significant majority blatantly shirk dish-washing responsibilities, with most saying they would leave a pot to soak rather than scrubbing away when it was their turn to do the dishes. And worse - 47 per cent of respondents admit having thrown out a pot because it was too difficult to clean. I think when I was young(er) I threw out a pot.

LOL and ICK!
Lol on the pot scrubbing ... I've been known to do that or stick them in the dish washer ... and then try the scrubbing thing.
Ick on the sponges! Bleerk! We're a bit fussy in this house about sponges and tea-towels.

I am a teatowel buying freak ,..my linen cupboard is teeming with teatowels and dish cloths ,.. (muttering under my breath among other things) I was taught by my nan to wash the dishcloth and hang it out to air and dry and it will last for ages
she was right I have heaps I have done that over the ages and still have them all after yrs of use
we are also great believers in the paper towel trail
is my kitchen spotless ,..ummmm ahhhh ooohhmmm not if it was left up to me
Im too blimin lazy ,.as for the pot scraping ,...ohh gawwwd my nails ,...hahahahaha!! serious!!

Well I don't use sponges for dishclothes, I use the chux thingies and sometimes throw them in the washing machine and reuse, but mostly I chuck them after about a weeks use, or sooner if they get irretrievably stained (we have a lot of curries & chili meals). Tea towels don't get used much because the dishwasher does a good job .. but the soaking pots, lol I am guilty of, especially the throwing them in the dishwasher and scrubbing afterwards (sparrow) ;D
