Here's the item:
"Blind" driver stopped speeding on motorway August 20, 2008, 3:27 pm ADVERTISEMENT Police in Canterbury are urging drivers to scrape the ice of their windscreens after stopping one speeding motorist with virtually zero visibility.
Canterbury traffic manager Derek Erasmus said the motorist was stopped doing 90kmh on the northern motorway, having bothered to scratch out barely more than a slit in the ice coating his windscreen.
"You could see his visibility was practically nil and it is not worth the risk to other road users.
"You need to see where you are going if you want to be a safe driver."
He said the driver could be charged with careless use of a vehicle or be given an instant $150 fine.
Mr Erasmus recommended motorists take a few minutes to use of cold water or a scraper before heading off in the morning.

Good gosh - thats dangerous!
He had absolute minimal visibility .... makes me wonder what was so important that he was willing to risk driving under such conditions? Too lazy to splash a bit of water onto the windshield too by the sounds of it.
Why did the cop suggest cold water & a scraper? I use warm or hot water from the jug if my windows are frosted up. Is that the wrong thing to do or what?

Honestly ... you should see some of the loons down here, Missti. I'm sure there are bad drivers everywhere, but add in ice and snow, and some of it can be pretty eye popping.
On the water thing, we've been told to use cold or luke warm water on the ice. Something about expansion and contraction can shatter glass. I also use an old plastic card to scrape the ice off. You can clear the windscreen really quickly.
