Fears over peanut butter products spread to NZ Tuesday, 20 January 2009
There are concerns a salmonella outbreak that has killed at least six people in the United States may spread to New Zealand.
Initial recalls of peanut butter shipped to US nursing homes and cafeterias broadened with the Kellogg Co recalling 16 products after officials confirmed salmonella contamination at a Georgia facility that shipped peanut products to 85 food companies.
Abbott Nutrition has recalled three food bars sold in New Zealand because of the possibility of salmonella contamination in the ZonePerfect chocolate peanut butter bars, peanut toffee bars and NutriPals peanut butter chocolate nutrition bars.
The Columbus, Ohio-based company said the bars were exported to New Zealand, Mexico, and Singapore,
Salmonella is a leading cause of food poisoning; common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps, and the outbreak is the second in the US in two years involving peanut butter.
------------------- Missed this yesterday. Given all the bugs we've had over the summer period this is another that may be of concern for peanut freaks like myself.

As long as Kraft peanut butter doesn't disappear off the shelves, it doesn't affect me, not a great lover of peanuts. Macadamias, pistachios & cashews however, are another story Thought it prudent to add that I think the deaths were a terrible outcome from the firm responsible and hope they get their butts sued and hope there are no further casulties anywhere else they export their fouled products to.

It's good to know this info, I'll tell my other family members about it. I'm on a complete health kick at the moment and only eating all that's good and peanut butter is definitely not on that list.

I wonder where the peanut butter is actually being produced? I'm checking all labels these day, I prefer not to buy food products made in China.

Wow - I love peanut butter, and its actually on my shopping list for t'moro. I think I'll buy jam instead! lol ... I used to make my own jams, but its so expensive to make that it works out cheaper to buy the darn stuff. Oh & the sugar .... gee you have to use so much sugar for jams. And for bottling fruit. Once again, cheaper to buy the cans.
Eventually I'd like to get back to the whole 'living off the land' lifestyle, grow my own veges and fruit etc. But dunno if that will ever pan out. This country bumpkin been living in the cities too long. One day tiger .... one day!

Actually while we're still speaking of jams (lol) .... I've had the lemon honey and its really lovely & yes, esp on toast. A hokohoko shop here sells it, some old biddies who still enjoy making little jars of jam with pretty little gingham lid coverings on them (hehehe) the second hand shop sells them for about $2 a jar. Real nice.
Anyways, my Japanese mate gave me a jar of KIWIFRUIT JAM she made, and I really liked it! Living in Kiwifruit County I've learned there are Kiwifruit jams, honeys, great soap, wax and moisturisers too. Such a versatile fruit isn't it? lol
Who needs plain old peanut butter? hehehe

You can make your own peanut butter Misti & Lux. Not sure of the procedure (whether you roast the nuts 1st etc etc) but know it involves a blender and peanuts ;D Mmm I love cherries too Lux and have been making the most of the season recently .. lots of pips and stems in my car ashtray which I keep forgetting to empty I don't like those slimy ones in fruit cakes, the glace variety, but I used to love the Cherry Ripe chocolate bars. That was weird as I'm not a fan of dark chocolate or preserved cherries, but they seemed to go together really well.

I'd like to know why all the highly processed and fatty foods taste so good and make you want to eat more? Look at the fast food outlets, they say those foods are addictive to people and what about sugar? All the things that are bad for you doesn't cost as much at the supermarket, but go and buy all the fresh and good food and tally up the amount at the end of you're shop? It's enough to make you cry. My wallet cries a lot lately.

Mine cried today when I bought my usual brand of coffee at another store .. a difference of more than $2 .. and the more expensive one was from the Warehouse of all places!! Forgot to buy some on my last supermarket trip and didn't want to run out over the weekend. Should drink tea instead. I can understand about the processed food cailz, it's a trap for those who either can't or don't want to cook from scratch. The companies who produce them must have very clever people working for them, on both the production side and the marketing. I'm always amused by the "LOW FAT" labels proudly (yeah right) displayed on a myriad of supposed diet and healthy foods, look at the label and they are full of sugar. Probably more fattening than butter or oil.
