A teenage boy-racer was told by a judge today the community was disgusted with "young men with too much money and not a single functioning brain cell among the lot of you".
Judge Raoul Neave gave his views when jailing Daniel Joseph Avery following an ugly boy-racer incident at Charteris Bay on the Banks Peninsula.
Avery earlier admitted charges including possession of an offensive weapon, drink-driving, dangerous driving, threatening damage with intent to intimidate, and intentionally damaging a car.
The judge said Avery had terrorised locals with threats, dangerous driving, and drunken riotous behaviour.
He was the driver of a car carrying a group of boyracers, one wearing a wolf mask, which fishtailed out of control on a grass verge beside a golf course, intimidating golfers and picnickers.
Defence counsel David Ruth said Avery contended there was some provocation on either side.
But he added: "It is clear he was in the wrong from the way he was driving and from other factors."
Judge Neave told Avery : "You are a menace on the road and you have already forced the court to send you to prison.
"That really is a record to be proud of at the age of 19, isn't it?"
He said it was sad that Avery's only support system "are the losers who were involved in this offending with you".
He was assessed as having no motivation to change, and as a high risk of reoffending.
"You have a harmful pattern of alcohol use, and I am pretty sure significant cannabis use explains your attitude."
Judge Neave jailed Avery for 16 months and suspended his community work sentence.
He will still have to complete it when he is released.
Judge Neave also disqualified Avery from driving for a year.
