At long last somebody has woken up and yes they are the Official names and rightly so too - cause for a celebratory drinkies The names North Island and South Island have never been made Official - Just watch this space - somebody will be doing the "Pukana" and want the Nth & Sth Island names made Official. What you reckon - either way is fine with me

I much prefer Te Ika a Maui and Te Waipounamu which lots of people use anyway - North and South Is. are a bit bland and boring.

I remember this being advocated in the early 90s and all these idiots saying it would hurt the tourist industry because "foreigners" couldn't pronounce the words. TV3 interviewed all these "foreigners" (Chinese, Japanese, Spanish etc) and they pronounced the words with ease, and better than many of the "locals". LOL. It really cracked me up. It was a good way to disprove an argument.

I think it's a good thing and going by what the majority have been saying in Op threads on this topic, most agree with it
