I think the only way to keep yourself safe, is to not trust those who you have no personal history of.
I can understand why some would risk everything to be in a loving relationship, but the evidence that I've seen of internet relationships, is they go bad more often than they succeed. There are just too many nutters out there waiting to prey on the innocent.
