Its like the darn boy racer thing, where do they get the money from? Finance companies dish out cash too willy nilly... And cars are very cheap here in NZ... $5000 can get you a very quick little death trap.

Talking about teen alcohol abuse... there was a bit on the news today (Netherlands) about a young boy of 12 found unconscious in the street with alcohol poisoning. Apparently he and his mates had been downing quite a bit of alcohol before going off to a pub!! I wonder how much the parents know about what their kids are doing and where they are going? I know kids can be sneaky and inventive, but some parents don't seem to give a damn where their kids hang out or what time they get in?? When my kids were 12 they sure as heck weren't out and about till all hours, and if they were sleeping over at someone's place I sure would be in touch with that someone's parents!!

from 16 for soft liquor and from 18 for the hard stuff. These boys were given alcohol from a 16 year old. He won't be charged with anything though because its only illegal to SELL alcohol to under 16-s. How messed up is that?? The 12 year-old is still in a coma

CDA wants breathalyser for kids 2 July 2007
AMSTERDAM – Young people under the age of 16 who are suspected of having drunk alcohol should be subjected to a breathalyser test. The Telegraaf reports on Monday that the Christian democrat CDA in Parliament wants to introduce this idea.
The idea is part of an action plan aimed at reducing nuisance from youth hanging about on the streets. It is currently not permitted to subject children of this age to breathalyser tests.
CDA MP Mirjam Sterk says that alcohol use among this age group is taking on horrifying proportions. Sterk says that at least 7 percent of children in the last two years of primary school drink alcohol on a weekly basis.
Those children are between the ages of 10 and 12. "And even worse, the average age of children admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning is 13.5 years," the MP says.
If a breathalyser test shows that a child has been drinking alcohol, the police should report this to the Centre for Youth and Family, which will provide the family with either voluntary or compulsory support in child-rearing..

That is so young Yollie. I guess every country has their problems with their youth and it is interesting to learn that NZs youth are not alone in getting out of hand with alcohol, drugs etc.
