A camera crew went out with a group of hunters from Timaru but not in the bush. Just taped them hanging around getting drunk and shooting at things. There would have been about 10 of them and they had this fire arms expert guy look at the tape. He couldn't believe the things they did including one of them going over to the bonet of a car and shooting at things while his mates were not very far away on the other side of the car from him. One of them could easily have walked across and got shot. They were all pissed. Stuff like that. One guy was a big show off and probably made it look worse but it was bad. They showed something of some Waimate hunters before this too according to the wife and kids but I missed it. That didn't shed a good light on things either.
My wife while working at a local petrol station couldn't believe these young guys who stopped in to top their car up, going out shooting again only a few months after one of them had shot and killed his brother accidentally while out hunting.
Not long after moving here, we got the frights of our lives late one night. It was straight after the all blacks had just beaten the Aussies in a rugby match and BANG, Man it seemed really close but yeah our neighbours had watched the rugby game and then gone out shooting rabbits in the paddocks next to us and they were spotlighting in my paddocks with my horses in them too. They fired their guns along side the road too which is illegal and yep, when they got one, they would all yell out Yeee Haaaa. No bull
South of Ashburton and you're in a whole new world. I know what Texas is like now.

The wife just emailed me and said that she heard on the radio this morning that the Waimate police are going to investigate the incidents on Campbell the other night.

Its not just confined to that neck of the woods. Getting pissed, and playing with guns is part of the farming/country culture, along with rugby and hard work.

I have lived in farming communities in both North Canterbury and South Canterbury and We came across none of the redneck stuff in North Canty that we've seen down here. Plus the programme was about South Canterbury.
