I think its a good idea, while students and teachers say, thats students have should the right to make choices, there is clear indication that the wrong choices are being made. I think it sends a positive message to food distributors to take a look at and make improvements in the foods they are offering our kids.

A good idea. But is it a new idea? I seem to remember this issue being debated last year?

I think a lot of schools have already moved towards setting a healthy example, I don't think theres anything wrong with that. Most crap foods are banned from Pre-schools, don't see why it can't follow on to primary and secondary schools.
I do remember some debate over it, but is this a bigger step forward not sure where it was at last year.

Our kids don't eat at school, well not at primary school anyway. Most of them go home for lunch, there are some that stay under provided supervision (working parents etc) but they bring their own lunches. The primary school my kids went to frowned upon "bad" snacks like cakes, biscuits, chips and asked parents to provide sandwiches and fruit instead.

Makes sense doesn't it, why would we even want our kids to have choices between bad and good food? We should want them to make choices around all good foods. A change in the way we think as consumers will pressure food industries to get there act together.

So true. We as consumers do have a lot of power, perhaps we should start exercising this power.

well in the uk all schools provide hot dinners, the law has changed and from sept last year they have had to start making food healthier it is being a phased in operation from next sept there will be no 'unhealthy' food sold at all including drinks the only thing they will able to sell will be water. At son's primary school they have noticed the increase in packed lunches being brought to school, they just don't want the school dinners! Be interesting to see what happens at high school as i work there at lunch times, when they cut out the rest of the unhealthy food, they have vending machines which at the moment are available at break time but not lunch time but from sept they will completely go.

Was that Jamie Olivers influence Queenie? There has been a program on Sky tv Food channel(NZ) where he was making school dinners healthier. I only saw the one episode so don't know the whole story behind it.

About vending machines, no need really to get rid of them, just stack them with healthier choices, we have a healthy eating policy at our place of work but still have vending machines.

Was that Jamie Olivers influence Queenie? There has been a program on Sky tv Food channel(NZ) where he was making school dinners healthier. I only saw the one episode so don't know the whole story behind it. I saw a couple of the installments actually. He visited some schools and tried out new (healthy) meals on the kids. It looked pretty good, don't know what the outcome was though. At the moment they are showing his series here "goes Italian", I saw the first installment last night, it was great! He really goes local, starting off on Sicily on a street market and got the owner to let him do some cooking with fish. Only he added herbs and sauces and got them to try it, which they wouldn't at first. They loved it when they finally did try it!

Do you get the uncut version Yollie? I got quite a shock when I watched the school one above. Lots of "f" words from Jamie .. it seemed really strange coming from him. I've seen Gordon Ramsey going to town with the expletives, but Jamie? Lol I thought he was a "nice" boy ;D I'll have to keep an eye out for the Italian series, but knowing Sky tv it will be a few years before they get around to buying it.

Well he did use quite a few f's etc, so I guess its the uncut version.
Yeah Gordon does go pretty much over the top. He was on last night as well, right after Jamie, another restaurant saved. I was quite impressed as I was sure this one wouldn't make it, but he came through in the end, lol.
