Samoa’s new Head of State
Tupua Tamasese Tupuola Efi
Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Tupuola Efi was elected on Friday 15th June as Samoa’s Head of State.
The decision came from the office of the Legislative Assembly after a Parliament meeting Friday morning. Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese was the only nomination put forth in Parliament and unanimously decided by members of Parliament present at Mulinuu.
Tupua Tamasese takes over from the late Malietoa Tanumafili II, who died last month. He will hold the position for a period of five years until another Head of State election.
Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese, a former Prime Minister of Samoa, is well known in academic and cultural circles for his oratory skills.
He served as Prime Minister from 1976-1982; and as Deputy Prime Minister from 1985-1988.
He is a member of one of the Kingly Families (Aiga Tupu) holding the Kingly title of Tuiatua. He is well known for his passion for the Samoan culture and history.
He has also published several insightful accounts of the Samoan culture, which includes Clutter in Indigenous Knowledge, Research and History: A Samoan Perspective and many other writings in both English and Samoan.
“ I fully endorse the decision made by the Parliament of Samoa,” says Su’a William Sio, Otara’s Manukau City Councillor. “The fact that Parliament were united in their nomination of Tuiatua Tupua will be read by the Samoan community as a strong indication that this decision is also supported by God. I have no doubt that all of Samoa will welcome Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi to this new calling. We will all pray that God give Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi strength & wisdom to carry out his role for the people of Samoa."
