Any reason if any why you wouldn't recommend AVG

I was wondering that also. I've always used it and have had no virus problems. Mind you I still use windows98se and understand that is less prone to getting invaded.

Any reason if any why you wouldn't recommend AVG simply because I have repaired quite a few computers with avg on it, and scanned it with avast and its found and removed virus's that avg did not even know about, real world results mean far more to me than other recommendations.

They don't seem to have a facilty on their site to do a free scan, so I'm guessing I will have to download & install it. Uninstalling AVG beforehand?

Grrrrrrr I did everything in the suggested order, but there was a problem uninstalling AVG. I removed the registry files and the start up ones in msconfig thinking that would get rid of the problem, but no. I ran the Avast one and had no virii[?] then deleted that and ended up downloading AVG again to repair my botched up one. Seemed easier to keep what I was familiar with and I didn't like the idea of parts of avg lurking about and the fact it was still working in the start up.

Ooops I should have said the grrrrrrr wasn't aimed at you scruffy, it's my computer, it seems to have a mind of it's own and doesn't like being interfered with

Well after having a bit if a look-see online I would say go with either Intego, symantec or macfee as they seem to be the most reliable and easiest to use

For best security, I'd recommend nuking Windows all together and going to Ubuntu Linux ;D

Very timely, this thread being resurrected (thanks Stu) My sons laptop has avg and a notice keeps coming up saying he needs to download the newest version, so will do the avast thing it seems to work better on later Windows versions. We have Bullguard on our new comp which seems to be doing okay at protection.

my avg spat the dummy this weekend. a '.bin file' went missing so the a/v would not work. have downloaded avast and it is going ok. I removed the avg and downloaded a new one but it failed to install.. I cant remove it because it wasnt installed? ?? drove me nutty but will this hurt avast or allow anyhting to sneak in between the cracks? thanks anyone!!!!!!!!!!!

I downloaded, but when I tried to run it, it came up CORRUPT FILE. Tried it twice.
I'm having problems trying to 'dislodge' AVG too.
HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!
