Some of the films I'd recommend are: Earth, Fire and Water. A Trilogy by the Indian Director Deepa Meehta. Primarily these films are about women's experience in India. They are excellent.
Another film I saw recently is Osama and it is set in Afghanistan. Highly recommended, but incredibly harrowing. I don't know if I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I saw it.
Also "All the Mornings of the World" (French) brilliant and if you love period pieces and music - this is your film.
The Russian films: Burnt by the Sun and Knightwatch are interesting. Two completely different films, but definitely worth a look. Burnt by the Sun is about a General who came to the "attention" of Stalin. Knightwatch is an interesting surreal vampire movie.
Anyone got any recommendations?

I watched a couple of good films on DVD. Paradise Now (harrowing) which is a Palestinian film on suicide bombers. It is not for the faint hearted, but I found it fascinating.
The other one was a film called Downfall. It was the first film out of Germany in 50 years that looks at Hitler's last days in the Bunker. Interesting.

A couple of Dutch films that came out with pretty good critics are De Tweeling (the twins) and more recently Zwartboek (Black book).
I must admit to not having seen either of them myself, lol, its not really my genre (WWII).
