I went to Greece with an Aussie mate for a holiday but we were so broke we had to cash our air ticket in and get a coach back to London. What an experience that was!!!! We were told we didnt need any visas to get thru any of the European countries, soooooooooo off we set!! We got to the Yugolavia/Hungary border, and they wouldnt let us thru cos we didnt have visas. We were locked up in a cell, looked after by ARMED guard and I dont think my knees have ever knocked so loudly! I was petrified!!! We had no cash, only credit cards and they wouldnt accept credit card payment for our visas lol!
Luckily the coach driver came good and paid for us and when we got to an ATM we got the cash for him!! One experience I will never forget lol

OMG!
I once flew Aeoroflot (come on - it was cheeeeeap!) and we had an unscheduled stop in Russia. I didn't have a visa and so was confined to a few rooms in the airport.
I went into the loo (as one does) and heard a voice saying "help, help". The hinges on the toilet door this woman was in had basically shattered and the door was stuck. After trying to get the door open, we decided the best thing to do would be for me to kick it in. (Don't ask me why, but this seemed like a good idea at the time). Anyway, I kicked and kicked the door until it came off its hinges. The woman and I were giggling like school kids - until we realised we'd just vandalised a door in Russia! We then both ran off in different directions as fast as possible.
BTW: I also go vegetarian when I'm on the road. In Russia - my vegetarian meal consisted of 8 potatoes ... Boiled and that was it.

On that trip we also had an 8 hour stop in Brussels, it was November and it was cold. By then we had run out of funds completely, and had made friends with an English girl called Catherine. the 3 of us went busking!! It was soooooooooooo cold!! And the only songs that all of us knew were either Beatles songs or Christmas carols haha. BUT it worked and this bus load of Japanese tourists took pictures of us and gave us lots of money! (as jap tourists do lol) We rushed to the first cafe and still had enough for some duty free ciggies on the ferry trip back to Dover. Might be one story I wont tell my kids when they are old enough to travel!

She was god-awful at singing. She was/is one of the funniest people I ever met. She was really broke when we went touring once and I offered to stump her some cash. She refused and went begging instead ... OMG!

The one thing about the busking was while I was standing there trying to sing, all I was thinking was 'my mum would kill me if she could see me now lol'

When I went to Italy - I decided that I would take a side trip from Rome to Florence and Assisi ... since I got that chance. (I am really glad that I did, but damn did it deplete my funds!) This put me on a bus for quite a while. The side trip was actually 2 extra trips... we went to Assisi for a full day... and went back to Rome for a few days...then stopped in Florence for most of the day on our way to Milan before departure back to the states... needless to say... the bus driver finally realized that 50 people cooped up on a bus for several hours.... was not a good idea... so he stopped to let us stretch, grab a snack and piddle... we were at some very busy kind of travel station... I think it would be the equivalent of a truck stop. I had to go to the toilet badly, and I'm not a fan of the onboard bus pot... so I was greatful for the stop... I went to grab for my toilet seat cover... when I realized.. WTF no seat?! apparently this wasn't news to anyone else. I was screaming out of the stall (which was not acutally in a bathroom... it was just kind of a stall out in the open.... with all kinds of people going by).... OMG how am I supposed to use this toilet? there's no seat.... everything got quiet.. and then people just started laughing. public pots are no good!
