We have bought a new computer (arrives Friday) and I thought I'd buy a flash drive to copy the files I want from this comp to move to the new one. I got one today, well 2, I paid for a 2gb and got a 1gb for $1 from Warehouse Stationary. I knew I had to download the driver for it as this comp is running Win 98SE and did so, but when I put the flash drive in, it crashed the comp. I vaguely remembered reading somewhere you shouldn't plug some usb thingys into the usb ports on the front of the box, so I tried one in the back .... that went well, until I realised I had to have the software program to run the darn thing. Downloaded that, or thought I had, but I get a message "Cannot find device, please replug it" or some such thing. If you see this scruffy or anyone who may know anything about this, have I downloaded the wrong software, or am I flogging a dead horse doing it myself and really need an expert to transfer the files for me?

First step is remove the flash drive and replug it in.
second step if first does not work, locate correct driver for the model of flash drive you have. I have two of the same brand, and can only use the one driver for each unit as the other driver does not like the other drive (the only difference is the size of storage on it i.e. 1 gig and a 2 gig) with win98, and have to reboot after installing it b4 trying to use it.
and no you dont need a tech to do it for you, they are a pain under w98 but easy under w2k and above.

Re the flash drive, there are so many different drivers, I had difficulty in finding the right one for mine and the matching software. We have ordered an Adata one which is coming with the comp, so hopefully that might be easier to find the drivers and the software. I'll give it another go later on, following your advice .. cheers for that

We had a choice xp or vista but the guy who we are getting it off, obviously thinks as you do ;D I had no luck with the flash drive, I even rang the support line but still no luck with it. He said it may be faulty and to try it out on another comp (haven't done so yet). Tomorrow is another day and we got the Adata one today, so I might try that one.

Things are not going well with this new comp .. Whatever I try I cannot get the screen so I can see it without needing a blardy magnifying glass. Everything is so small, my eyes hurt and I'm just about ready to give up for the day. On the good side, it's nice and quiet, it's quick .. as I haven't cluttered it up with lots of rubbish ... yet!! Still haven't had any luck with the flash drive, I ended up burning all the files onto a cd but a few, including my address book, didn't show up when I put them onto the new comp. Could I email or import that from the old comp? I will have to reattach the monitor to do that though, we didn't get a new one as we had bought an LCD one last year.

Things are not going well with this new comp .. Whatever I try I cannot get the screen so I can see it without needing a blardy magnifying glass. Everything is so small, my eyes hurt and I'm just about ready to give up for the day. Well First, lcd's work at the highest resolution so you need to right click on the desktop and select properties and goto the settings tab then slide the bar across to get it to 800 * 600 or 1024 * 768 to get it larger. other way is control panel - display - settings tab. On the good side, it's nice and quiet, it's quick .. as I haven't cluttered it up with lots of rubbish ... yet!! Excellent * in a Mr Burns evil way * LOL Still haven't had any luck with the flash drive, I ended up burning all the files onto a cd but a few, including my address book, didn't show up when I put them onto the new comp. Could I email or import that from the old comp? I will have to reattach the monitor to do that though, we didn't get a new one as we had bought an LCD one last year. For the address book you need to search for *.wab and then copy that file to cd and then you can import it into outlook express, (if your using OE of course, if using Outlook its all in one file search for *.pst) copy this to the cd as well. If you want your emails search for *.dbx files and copy these to the cd (OE) the pst file holds the emails as well in outlook. Then open outlook express and select mail or address book- then browse to the cd address book folder and import, for the emails select email then from oe store folder, browse to cd folder with dbx files and select import. and you would be done...

It's all good now ... thanks scruffy. I tried the option you suggested first off (800 x 600) and it distorted all the icons, but now I've changed the font sizes and icon buttons etc etc etc, it's looking much better, so I kept it at that resolution. Web browsing is now back to, as I know and love it ;D ;D Re the address book, when we first had problems a few months back, I actually typed out the addys, so last night entered them all manually more sore eyes ;D Thanks for your advice and help, much appreciated and no doubt I will be back as I discover more xp dilemmas.
