I'm going to be different and say I don't think any government
policy, or lack of, are in any way actually responsible for the state of a persons mind,
and what leads them to commit suicide. The lack of support, may cause frustration and anger
to those who have suffered a family member suicide. But ultimately that lack, imo wouldn't have been the actual "trigger".
There are many that can be seen as one though, such as .........
the use of drugs, eg, marijuana can
exacerbate some mental conditions, such as schizophrenia.
A friend who's son suffered that condition and was a habitual 'smoker',
was completely out of control and would not and was never interested in seeking help.
He ended his life in his mid 20's.
Another schizophrenia/marijuana example was one of boys I mentioned above.
Also ended his life in his mid 20's.
Imo drugs, alcohol, music (eg death metal), lack of a vision for any future
(enhanced by tales of the apocalypse .. I've listened to my son & his mates talking about there being no future for them)
are four possible reasons that can contribute to many young taking their life.
What can any govt do to change these four things?
Drugs are already banned and their use punishable, alcohol perhaps should be, but never will,
nor will music or stories from the bible.
Had to rush off before I finished this earlier.
I saw something Latrelle wrote in the thread in TM re
the police telling her that some young experiment with suicide methods [?].
This I have heard before and they think was the cause
of one of the boys who died in the rash of suicides in Upper Hutt
in the 90's. He was a well adjusted, bright, intelligent, popular etc etc, had it all boy, with no reason known to any of his family
or friends, for wanting to end his life.
Whatever the cause or the reason for the young to lead them
to do this, we can only hope we recognise the signs and something can be done to lead them away from that final desperate decision.
