People quote this 80% but I'm wondering in what poll it came from. It's interesting to note on that issue that the petition signatures are now being audited and they've found thousands of invalid signatures already, they'll be continuing to audit this thing until Tuesday too!

The audit will be carried out by a crown statistician. You can whinge all you like about that but these guys are both morally and contractually obliged to be accurate. They'll most likely be checking the signatures against the electoral roll - I actually saw those carrying out the petition accepting signatures from people who looked younger than 18 so it will be interesting to see how many are counted as invalid.
You think NZ is a dictatorship? Mate I've travelled to several dictatorships in the last five years and this is clearly not one of them.

I've said this elsewhere, but I may as well say it here too: the repeal of section 59 never affected us. We chose not to smack our kids and haven't - although like most parents - have probably been tempted! I thought there was a lot of room before repealing Sec. 59, such as making it clear that parents are not allowed to hit on the head, with weapons etc, etc, etc. Who I really blame for the repeal of Sec. 59 are the idiot people who sat on juries and allowed defendants who had beaten their kids with weapons to be acquitted on the grounds of "reasonable force". Using any weapon on a kid is not "reasonable force", nor is hitting your kid on the head etc. Juries, which are made up of ordinary New Zealand citizens, had ample opportunity to create legal precedents on what is and isn't acceptable within the bounds of Sec. 59. They didn't take it and the section was repealed.

The S59 debate was horribly exaggerated to the point where they were saying we'd need to build more prisons because "every" parent in New Zealand would be locked up. Didn't happen. About the only thing that has changed is people like the Timaru woman would've been penalised sooner (as she deserves!).
Going off on a slight tangent here but did anyone notice how the pro-smackers actually supported this woman? She hog tied this poor child and beat him with a riding crop (and then tried to sell it on Trademe!)! That's disgusting and had I been the judge I would have her locked up!

I think it's disgusting too, Darthman and then they're the same ones who bleat on, and on about violent people in society.

hmmm maybe if everyone stopped doing the blame game and actually worked at solving the problems with abuse then the there would be no stupid laws brought in, and as already stated the law was enuff before the repel, its was just not enforced correctly by namby pamby judges and to some extent jurys which were not given all the facts, and were led by the judges as to what was allowable in there to make the decision on. if ya get what i mean

Actually National aren't promising anything, shame they haven't got the integrity to try getting in on merit rather than relying on the dis-satisfaction of the masses with the current Government.

And National do care for the majority? Time and time again they've shown this not to be the case - through the Bolger and Shipley years, through Muldoon if you are old enough to remember him. National have a clear cut agenda and the nasty bits we have seen of it so far are only the tip of the iceberg. The reason John Key won't release any policy is not because Labour will steal it but rather that it will sink him.

There's another thing I'll rant and rave about: Why hasn't anyone cottoned onto the fact that the majority of posters in there are card carrying National and ACT members?
I'm all for freedom of speech and such but when you have a pack of drones reposting National press releases and passing it off as their own opinion it starts to become really dishonest.

I think alot have darthman - I also think that your typical laborite hasn't got the TIME or the inclination to face a tirade of cowpoo should they bother to voice their differences of opinion... and those that do, good on them for having the patience.

Yes: the internet is friend to those sorts of people because it creates a necessary distance between face to face encounters and the imagined cyber personality.

Just a bunch of well rounded losers at life really taking their problems out on the government. Oh but some of them are so well travelled darth. Just ask them: they'll tell you over and over again. They'll also tell you how successful they are at business etc and how wealthy they are - yet they spend all day and night on the internet ...
