There was a portion in my local village (rag) newspaper that had a thumbs up/thumbs down section. Where anyone could write in, email, ring or go to the shop front to report things they liked or did not like about anything and everything - local. It is a very popular! The clippings were short & sweet, sometimes laughable, sometimes serious, sometimes thought provoking, but nonetheless quite entertaining to read.
One such report went like thus:
THUMBS DOWN ..... for the local councils for not providing sufficient lighting down the Hunter Park walkway, someone could trip up & get hurt walking down that path at night. I just hope its not me who goes arse over tit one night!
Then a week later, I read this in the rag:
THUMBS DOWN .... to the person who used derogatory language to describe their angst over the Hunter Park walkway. Shame on you!
ANYWAY, I mention this because I thought it might be nice to have this thread where people can mention their thumbs up & thumbs down moments. It can be about anything at all. Funny, serious, topical, hilarious, commentative, theological, whatever burns your candle or lights your flame! lol
What you see in life, at the supermarket, at work, at the park, on the beach, in the carpark, at the pub, on the sidewalk. Stuff that makes you smile or grimace. Share it with us!!!
Just make sure you title it : THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN
Cheers ~

THUMBS UP Country meets city? I was on the bus the other day and this old kuia was singing a lovely waiata, it was kinda weird you know because people don't do that in the city, but it reminded me of travelling around the east coast to play netball and everyone singing on the bus...what was also really lovely was this lady saying goodbye to the kids hoping off the bus to get to school, telling them to have a good day. This lady may have been a bit eccentric for a city bus but she sure brought home the country for me

Thumbs down
Pavement
Spent yesterday morning picking up suits and shoes for the 16's school formal. At the bus exchange put the box down and just missed a huge oral discharge on the pavement annoyed I looked up just in time to see a small group of youth spitting (yuk!).

Thumbs UP! Local Chemist. My Mum returned all of my Grandfathers medications to the local chemist yesterday, apparently any medication that is returned unused and within use by dates is donated to overseas voluntary medical services. So keep that in mind folks Maybe ask at your local chemist if the same applies.

THUMBS DOWN!
Countdown Supermarket
To the morons who continually park in the disabled carparking cos they're too damn lazy to walk the few extra feet! Those carparks are there for a reason, a purpose. And the elderly & disabled people NEED those few parks. I blew the shat outta the last able-bodied guy who did not have a disability card displayed and was clearly fit & agile, because I'd watched a poor old lady with her walking frame have to struggle to the store because of this young fellas arrogance!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Thumbs UP
A lovely story this morning on Good Morning channel one - Sister Yoyola at Home of Compassion, Island Bay Wellington Gardener of the year, talking about her 4 hectares of gardens at Home of Compassion she shared stories of some people she has meet during her years of nursing and how gardening had got them through some rough times. Also some gardening tips and utilising there vege gardens.

I sat in those gardens waiting for both of my sons to have ops. Lovely gardens and the sisters are lovely too. Both definitely deserve a "thumbs up" I have a "thumbs down" .. to one of my neighbours who have recently got a puppy and shouldn't have The poor wee thing is tied up to a table (outside) with a piece of rope about 50cm long. It can't move and was whimpering most of the night. The only shelter it has, is the small table top and it has nothing to lie on and no water that I can see.

re Maire post. Thumbs down to you re your post what have you down about it ph SPCA or do you just stand by and watch "it can't move" and hear the "whimpering." HELLO! My belief is watching and seeing a terrible and horrible and doing nothing to release the "puppy" the "poor wee thing" is definately6 thumbs down to you to. Thumps up comes when you do something active. ROGER! [ "I have a "thumbs down" .. to one of my neighbours who have recently got a puppy and shouldn't have The poor wee thing is tied up to a table (outside) with a piece of rope about 50cm long. Bing bong, could I ring the SPCA during the night? I checked the pup when I got up this morning at 6am and it had been let off, so it would have been pointless ringing to complain about it being tied up when it has only happened on two occasions. I have just noticed that they have been tying the pup up in the last two days and that was because of the pup whimpering. Please do not keep that knee jerk, uniformed thumb pointing downwards, as I will ring the SPCA if this happens again. It will not be the first time I have rang them, our current cat was the outcome of a complaint I made about a neighbours mistreatment of their so called pet. And I also complained to the SPCA about the previous occupants of the "pups" address, about that owners abysmal treatment of their dog.

re Maire your subsequent post unfortunately the thumb could have moved into the upward position however with your additional comment " it would have been pointless ringing to complain about it being tied up when it has only happened on two occasions. I have just noticed that they have been tying the pup up in the last two days and that was because of the pup whimpering." Please "only happened on two occasions" you got up at 6AM avoid and evade responsibilities isn't a solution or doing the best thing by way of the "whimpering" puppy. My hand I don't have to force into the down position on this one a natural response. RING RING RING SPCA or other support service they do have after hours!!!!!!!! You have witnessed this twice? ?!!!!!!!! [ "I have a "thumbs down" .. to one of my neighbours who have recently got a puppy and shouldn't have The poor wee thing is tied up to a table (outside) with a piece of rope about 50cm long. I wasn't aware of an after hour service, is that in all parts of the country?

Post by bingbong on Dec 13, 2008 12:56:49 GMT 12
Yes they do have an after hours service and Maire had a few options ie dog control they run after hours as well and leaving a message on an answer service is another option, emailing many options. I don't like people standing by and doing nothing whether it is people or animals no matter how in unpleasant it is. Of courses the unpleasantness pales into insignificance compared the harm done to an animal or person

They don't "do" after hours in Lower Hutt, as I have found out from first hand experience in the past. The two occasions bingbong were ... 1/ the pup was tied up for about an hour while the owners were out. 2/ The overnight occasion I mentioned above, but I see why you have got your dander up .. I mistakenly said "The poor wee thing is tied up" .. it should have been " was tied up" They have not repeated this 'offence', if they do, I will not hesitate to ring the spca

Anyway isn't it ok to tie a dog up? A long chain/in a run food water and shelter. Our dog used to have a wee cry when we went out without her, you can't take them everywhere, our dog was in no way being abused or mistreated.
