My Nana used to say "Books are your friends". Nice, but I prefer the human talking kind!
What are some of your favourites? Recommended? And what are you reading now?
I've just finished reading Mary Doria Russell's works called The Sparrow and Children of God. Highly recommended if you like Sci-Fi, but a little disturbing. Kind of like Stephen Donaldson's work. Great characters, but some pretty mind-blowing scenes.

When I first saw your name Sparrow, the book The Sparrow came to mind. I read it a few years ago, chosing it mainly for her name (apart from Doria) as it was my maiden name Silly reason, but I was happy I did it As you said it was disturbing in parts, but one of those books when you finish, you want more, so I was pleased when I found the Children of God. I'm a SF/Fantasy reader, but for light relief and to support the local Family Store will read anything that looks good. I enjoyed Bryce Courtney too Lux, his books are always a good read.

Awesome Maire! Russell's works were awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I quite often go "hunting" in what I term Nana bookstores. I have found some absolute treasures in there. I found 12 years worth of Journals of NZ History. I got all of them for $10.00! I also found Umberto Ecko's The Name of the Rose in there and the Stephen Donaldson Thomas Covenant series in another one. I got them for about $2.00 each. I view them as my treasures! I've bought a few books off auction sites. As of late - my main purchases have been books. I got one out of print and extremely rare for $5.00. Bargains! Gotta love that!

Russells two books were amazing and thought provoking, space travel on a meteor[?] but quite gruesome in parts, eg the mutilation of Emilios hands :x It's great picking up those book bargains Sparrow I've been on the lookout for years, for the rest of a series by Martin Middleton, that I had read book #1. As yet, I haven't had any luck but I haven't given up!! As you enjoyed Russells books, you may enjoy, if you haven't already, the Otherland series by Tad Williams. I had two attempts at reading the first book. The first time I tried, I found it weird and gave up after the first chapter!! Lol I know that's bad, I guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind for that particular book, at that time!! The second attempt was successful and there was no holding back on reading the other books in the series.

Maire "ditto" on Tad Williams. I read through those ones (if I remember rightly), but for some strange reason - the "singing" parts drove me nuts.
I like Katherine Kerr's Deverry Series and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon. Have to look out for Middleton. If I come across some for a bargain are you keen?

Yes I would be keen. I have Googled him and if I remember correctly, the series was called Chronicles of the Custodians. I have seen it available online at overseas sites but would rather buy it in NZ. I don't have a credit card either which is a factor If you come across any in the series, I would be very happy to buy. Cheers Sparrow . Offline now to organise some dinner for the hungry males.

At the moment I am reading Lynda la Plante's Cold Heart. Haven't gotten very far yet, been a hectic week and I'm just knackered when I finally lay my head down.
My favourite genre is SF/fantasy, have read most of Anne McCaffrey's dragon series, and also love Terry Brooks, have got his newest trilogy waiting to be read. I also succumb to Nora Roberts now and then, she has a bit of a magical twist in her romances.

I'm reading John Connelly's "The Killing Kind" at the moment.
I read all sorts, but not really into sci fi. Courtney is great, although I thought Brother Fish, while still a good read, wasn't as riveting as many of his others. I particularly liked Sylvia.

Jeffrey Deaver has written quite a few good books. He also wrote the Bone Collector, which was made into a great movie! I can't really remember any titles atm, except for The Empty Chair, which was good as well. He has written a few with the paraplegic detective and his good looking assistent (their names elude me as well, its too early lol)
